    • Participated in baseball, basketball, track, senior class play and National Honor Society as a student
    • Construction worker who carried brick/mortar when Hauser Jr. Sr. High School was built in 1965-1966
    • Graduated from the Indiana University Advanced ROTC program as Distinguished Military Graduate
    • Earned Certified Public Accountant Certificate
    • EMT for Hope Volunteer Fire Department for over 38 years
    • Bartholomew County Heart Savers, Inc. - helped establish charitable organization that raises funds, purchases and distributes AED's
    • Hope Town Council Member
    • Hope Optimist Club - "Outstanding Member of the Year"
    • 2002 God and Country Rally Distinguished Community Service Award
    • 2005 Hope Heritage Days Grand Marshal
    • Lifelong member of the Hope Moravian Church serving in a multitude of leadership roles
    • Blood donor - donating over nineteen gallons

      • In 2003, Norman Funeral Home under the ownership of John, was awarded the Reeves Award for serving the local community for over 100 years
      • Granted the Distinguished Community Service Award in 2003 by the Town of Hope
      • In 2004, Norman Funeral Home under the ownership of John, was awarded the State of Indiana Century Business Award
      • Board of Directors for the Yellow Trail Museum
      • Board of Directors for Hope Heritage Days Committee
      • Hope Heritage Days 2004 Grand Marshal
      • Founding member of the Hawcreek-Flat Rock Area Endowment
      • Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard award recipient for Outstanding Community Support
